Before I get into other thoughts on this topic, I'd like to suggest to you that you get baptized because it is pleasing to God.  As a person who is thankful to God for planning on a really nice place for you to spend eternity, why not just simply get baptized to please God.  Consider too, that Jesus asked to be baptized by John the Baptist.  And Jesus never had any sin.

Virtually all Christian pastors, priests, and preachers teach that one should be baptized.  Protestant pastors and preachers teach that one should be baptized by immersion, after one puts their faith in Jesus' death on the cross as payment for their sin.  For myself, I made a decision to be baptized after I put my faith in Christ, even though I had been baptized as an infant.  I wanted to be baptized as a result of my own decision, even though my parents had decided to have me baptized as an infant.

Some Christian churches believe the scriptures teach that Baptism, after coming to faith in Jesus' death and resurrection is a requirement for one to be saved.  Other Christian churches suggest this goes too far, but make the biblical argument that one should be baptized after putting their faith in Christ as a matter of obedience and as a testament to other believers and non-believers who may/will have their faith encouraged by your willingness to make a public declaration.

Some final thoughts.  I vividly remember the day and circumstances surrounding the event in which I was baptized.  I remember feeling really good and really spiritually clean.  I know of no scriptural references which support this experience, but I have asked many people, and they all remember their own baptism event with fondness.

Bible References
Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan to be baptized by him. And John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I need to be baptized by You, and are You coming to me?" But Jesus answered and said to him, "Permit it to be so now, for thus it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed Him. When He had been baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened to Him, and He saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting upon Him. And suddenly a voice came from heaven, saying, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
(Matthew 3:13-17 NKJV)

So I said, 'What shall I do, Lord?' And the Lord said to me, 'Arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do.' And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand of those who were with me, I came into Damascus. "Then a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good testimony with all the Jews who dwelt there, came to me; and he stood and said to me, 'Brother Saul, receive your sight.' And at that same hour I looked up at him. Then he said, 'The God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will, and see the Just One, and hear the voice of His mouth. For you will be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard. And now why are you waiting? Arise and be baptized, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.'
(Acts 22:10-16 NKJV)

Then Philip opened his mouth, and beginning at this Scripture, preached Jesus to him. Now as they went down the road, they came to some water. And the eunuch said, "See, here is water. What hinders me from being baptized?" Then Philip said, "If you believe with all your heart, you may." And he answered and said, "I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God." So he commanded the chariot to stand still. And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.
